The discharge of waste into Harare's water supply has resulted in the increase of costs of water purification chemicals from US$1 million to US$3 per month, a cabinet minister has said.

Speaking during a tour to assess work being done by Chinese contractors on sewerage and water pumping stations in Harare, Environment, Water and Climate Minister Savior Kasukuwere, said eight chemicals instead of three are now being used in purifying Harare's water.

He said the modernisation of the Firle Sewage Treatment Works, creation of a better pumping facility at Morton Jaffrey Water Works and efforts by council to rehabilitate 7 500 kilometres of piping in greater Harare to eliminate unwarranted pipe bursts will improve water supplies.

The Minister of Local Government, Public Works and National Housing, Dr Ignatius Chombo, who was also part of the tour, said Harare residents should realise that the illegal sanctions have affected the supply of water, as equipment necessary for the supply of water is difficult to source as a result of the illegal embargo.
