Head-on collision, 4 dead

FOUR people died on the spot while one was injured when a Toyota Corolla they were travelling in was involved in a head-on collision with another vehicle along Harare-Bindura Road on Tuesday night.
The Toyota Corolla which had five passengers on board was heading towards Bindura while the Ford Transit, which had three people, was heading to Harare.
Chief police spokesperson Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba urged motorists to exercise caution especially during the Easter and Independence holidays.
"It is really sad that we have started the holiday on a sad note as four people died on April 15 at 6.45pm when a Ford Transit vehicle which had no lights encroached on the lane of oncoming Toyota Corolla vehicle which was heading to Concession along the Harare-Bindura Road," she said.
She said the two vehicles collided head-on as the Ford Transit tried to overtake another vehicle.
"Three passengers and the driver from the Toyota Corolla died on the spot. One passenger was injured and was taken to Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals for treatment," Snr Asst Comm Charamba said.
She said the driver of the Ford Transit and the two passengers he was ferrying fled from the scene after the accident.
Snr Asst Comm Charamba said they had noted that most accidents were being caused by reckless drivers who were driving either public service or private vehicles.
"Speeding, human error and misjudgement, overloading and defective vehicles have all attributed to the increase in the number of accidents," she said.
She said last year, 50 people died while 273 others were injured in 424 accidents recorded during the Easter holiday. Of the 424 accidents, 36 of them were fatal.
Snr Asst Comm Charamba warned motorists to observe the road rules and regulations and ensure that their vehicles were roadworthy.
She urged motorists to cooperate with police officers when stopped at any roadblock and they were going to impound any unroadworthy vehicles.
