A teenage girl was burnt to death in an inferno that also gutted a New Marimba house, destroying property worth thousands of dollars last night.
The fire broke out at around 9pm at the Mawire house situated at the corner of Mukonono Road and Mhizha Street in New Marimba Park, Harare.
Ngoni Mawire who lives at the house with his mother and the 15-year-old housemaid, who is now deceased, told ZBC off camera that he was awakened by screams in the house only to discover that a fire had broken out.
Together with neighbours, the Mawires tried to break into the house to save the teenage girl who was trapped in the raging inferno but poor visibility hampered them from rescuing her.
An eyewitness said the fire was only put out by the fire brigade but it was too late to save the girl and the 9-roomed house.
The fire is suspected to have been caused by a candle that was left burning in the deceased's bedroom since there was a power cut.
Police forensic experts were at the scene of the fire and are still investigating the actual cause.
