Cops comply with Chihuri's directive not to invest in public transport

POLICE officers that were operating public transport have complied with Commissioner-General Agustine Chihuri's directive that they de-invest from the sector to avoid conflict of interests.
Those in the public transport business had been given a March 29 deadline to comply with the directive or face arrest.
In an interview with our Harare Bureau last Friday, Chief police spokesperson Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba confirmed the development.
"The date still stands and has not been extended. Most of the officers have complied and we have issued an order countrywide that if any kombi belonging to any officer is found on the roads, arrests should be made," she said.
She said so far no arrests had been made.
Commissioner-General Chihuri issued the order in January this year.
This followed revelations that half of the commuter omnibuses operating in Harare were owned by police.
Police, however, denied the allegations saying only 459 police officers in Zimbabwe owned and operated 647 commuter omnibuses.
