A woman and a child were Monday crushed to death by a Bindura-bound passenger train at Mount Hampden in the outskirts of Harare, the National Railway of Zimbabwe said Monday.

"The woman was carrying a baby and both were crushed at around 3pm in what is suspected to be a suicide case. We are concerned about lives lost in this manner," said NRZ spokesperson, Fanuel Masikati.

On February 24 this year, two drunken youths were crushed to death by a goods train at Skabela village near the resort town of Victoria Falls.

According to reports, one of the youths only identified as Braidon stepped in to pull off his friend who had slipped and fallen in the path of an oncoming train, but both crushed to death as they failed to move on time.

Masikati appealed to the public not to loiter, walk or rest on railway tracks since trains do not brake immediately.

In an unrelated incident, a train locomotive derailed in Gweru on Sunday afternoon, but noone was injured in the incident which occurred at Dabuka marshaling yard.

Masikati said the goods locomotive overran the line and went into a "desert", the NRZ's code for a place where there is no rail line.
