Three Zimbabwe National Roads Administration employees escaped death by a whisker on Tuesday after a Harare-bound bus developed problems with its breaking system and rammed into a tollgate in Chivi along the Masvingo-Beitrbidge highway.
The driver of the bus belonging to Locroy Bus Services failed to control it after the accident and it went on to crash a cabin on the roadside in which the workers were seated.
The workers sustained injuries and were rushed to Masvingo General Hospital.
The bus was carrying 44 passengers, including crew and was coming from South Africa when the accident happened.
Acting Masvingo provincial police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Nkululeko Nduna said the Zinara employees were treated and discharged after sustaining minor injuries.
He said the driver of the bus decided to move off the road to avoid hitting a vehicle that was in front after the brakes suddenly stopped working while approaching the tollgate.
"We are investigating the case to find out what actually caused the accident, but indications are that the mishap was caused by faulty brakes," said Asst Insp Nduna.
