An 8-year old girl from Harare's Hatcliffe Consortium was burnt beyond recognition when a cabin she was sleeping in caught fire.
Chantel Kavhai, who is a Hacliffe Primary School grade two pupil, died in an inferno last night when a cabin she was sleeping in caught fire.
In separate interviews, neighbours of the Kavhai family suspect that the fire was caused by a candle which had not been put off when the girl had retired to bed.
They said frantic efforts were made to save the child but that they were overpowered by the blaze, which burnt the girl beyond recognition.
The late Chantel's uncle, Tatenda Kavhai, who had visited the family from Concession, said the misfortune will always haunt him.
Meanwhile, Harare Provincial Police Spokesperson, Chief Superintendant Paul Nyathi has warned people using candles for lighting to make sure they put the candles off before retiring to bed and urged parents to always monitor the safety of their children at night.
