A Guruve man last week reportedly fatally struck his 19-year-old son with an iron bar on the head over a missing egg.

Sweremu Chiweshe of Chimbumu Village under Chief Chipuriro has since been arrested in connection with the murder of his son Allen.

Allen died on arrival at Guruve District Hospital.

Mashonaland Central police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Petros Masikati confirmed the incident.

He said Chiweshe (40) was still in police custody in and is expected to appear in court soon to answer to murder charges.

Asst Insp Masikati said Chiweshe had a misunderstanding with his son over a missing egg.

Masikati said it all started after Sweremu ordered his son to vacate a bedroom hut, which he had been using at the homestead. Allen is said to have complied and built a small hut in his father's compound.

Asst Insp Masikati said Sweremu, who was used to picking eggs from his fowl run found that one egg was missing.

He suspected that his son had taken it and confronted him over the missing egg. Allen denied ever taking the egg but admitted cutting 12 gum poles, which he used for roofing his hut.

Sweremu then reportedly picked an iron bar and struck his son once on the head inflicting a deep cut.

He was rushed to Guruve hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Insp Masikati urged people to respect the sanctity of human life saying, "in this case it seems the father preferred his gum poles and egg than his son."
