SINGER Alick Macheso's estranged wife Tafadzwa Mapako has filed a $7 000 maintenance claim at the civil courts for the upkeep of her two minor children and herself.

Last week, Macheso offered to pay $1 250 monthly maintenance for the trio. Mapako's lawyer David Ngwerume told NewsDay yesterday that the $7 000 claim was filed last week after the couple's relationship irretrievably broke down, culminating in the public spat.

The maintenance claim filed under case number M1963/14 is set to be heard next Tuesday.

Mapako's lawyer dismissed Macheso's claims that his former wife was playing hide-and-seek in a bid to avoid undergoing DNA tests to establish paternity of their two minor children.

He said Mapako was still waiting for Macheso to advise her of the date and the neutral venue where the tests would be conducted.

"We went for a round table meeting in April at the instance of Macheso through his lawyer Norman Mugiya and the issue of the paternity tests was discussed thereof where it was agreed that if the tests were to be conducted it would have to be through the blood transfusion services," Ngwerume said.

"To our surprise as we were waiting for written communication as to where and when the tests would be conducted when on May Day, Mugiya called me at around 8pm advising that my client should come the following day at some place, which was not the National Blood Transfusion Services Zimbabwe, for tests."

Ngwerume said given such short notice, he contacted his client who indicated she could not attend as she was in Mutare on holiday.

"My client is not running away with the children as alleged. That information is absolutely false, but she is very much willing to go for DNA tests at an agreed venue.

"We are waiting for them to come back to us and as soon as they are ready and have booked at National Blood Transfusion Services Zimbabwe, we will definitely attend on time."

Contacted for comment on the latest development Macheso's lawyer said the wrangle would be settled in court.
