A 26-year-old Bulawayo woman has been arrested after allegedly using a toy gun to rob a hiker of R1 000.
Patience Nkomo was arrested on Friday by Bulawayo police after conniving with her four other friends to rob a hiker who was on her way to Harare.
Acting police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Abedinico Ncube said Nkomo and her friends, Marvelous Ncube, Ashley Tishetso, Fredrick Sibanda and Anele Ngwenya, all aged 23, were arrested after robbing Duduzile Phakathi after offering her a ride in their friend's vehicle, a Nissan March, on Thursday night.
Nkomo is said to have been on a drinking spree with her four friends and resultantly they spend $40 which was in the Nissan March.
Sensing that they could have a fall-out with their friend who had lent them the car, they devised an armed robbery plan to recover the money.
"They gave a lift to Phakathi who was travelling to Harare fully knowing they wanted to rob her. They drove away with her and while in the car Nkomo produced a toy gun which they used to rob her," said Asst Insp Ncube.
Asst Insp Ncube said the toy gun belonged to Nkomo who is said to have brought it from South Africa.
He said Phakathi's friend led to their arrest as she had taken the vehicles number plates before it left the city.
Asst Insp Ncube said: "We are urging the people to use the designated hiking places and registered public transport. Whilst private cars can be faster they are risky at the same time," he said.
