Jonathan Moyo told to repeal harsh laws

Nelson Chamisa, the MDC-T shadow minister for Information, has called on Jonathan Moyo, the minister of Media, Information and Broadcasting Services, to lobby government to repeal harsh media laws.
In his state of the media address at Harvest House yesterday, Chamisa said despite Moyo's seemingly good intentions and well documented acrid criticism of the police clampdown on the media, there was still need for the "born-again" minister to walk the talk and charm his Cabinet counterparts to erase some of the country's harsh media legislation from the country's law books.
"There is need to align our laws with the new Constitution," Chamisa said.
"Minister Moyo now sounds more like an opposition activist.
"Instead of charming the media, he is supposed to go on a charm offensive in Cabinet so that they change the laws. He is trying to reinvent himself, maybe he is born again. Now he must show by deeds."
Moyo has recreated himself since his ruling Zanu-PF romped to power in last year's elections, displaying humility and good reason.
He recently denounced the overzealousness of the police in banning a march to commemorate World Press Freedom Day and has fiercely criticised the arrest of journalists using the draconian criminal defamation law.
