A consortium of Turkish construction executives in partnership with locals is to build 8000 housing units and two schools in Harare in the next two years, projects that are expected to change the face of Zimbabwe's construction sector.
Under the project, 5000 high density and 3000 medium density housing units will be built in a two year period.
Two primary schools are also expected to be built under the project which sources say will be sealed this Wednesday with government officials.
The technocrats from Turkey are in the country led by Hakan Kolenoglu, who has footprints across Europe in terms of architectural works.
The delegation arrived in Zimbabwe on Friday for a second visit to finalise the deal.
In an interview in Harare, Anadolu Construction Company spokesperson, Mr Abicia Ushewokunze said the projects will be carried out in phases with the first expected to see the construction of 1000 medium density houses in Westgate.
"We have agreed with the government in principle and the deal will be sealed this Wednesday. We hope to construct 1000 houses in Westgate while the other 5000 units will be constructed in phases. Primary schools will also be built," he said.
The construction of the housing units will come as a major boost to the local construction industry and other downstream sectors while also reducing the huge housing backlog.
According to the Zimbabwe Agenda for Sustainable Socio-Economic Transformation (ZIM ASSET), the country faces a housing backlog of 1,25 million units due to rising demand in urban and resettled areas.
