A suspected female armed robber was shot in the left thigh, while her male accomplice escaped unhurt during a high-speed chase by police detectives in Kuwadzana Extension, Harare, yesterday.
Sources close to the incident said the shooting occurred at around midday and the pair has since been arrested.
Police involved in the chase refused to comment on the case while attempts to speak to police spokespersons were fruitless as their mobile phones went unanswered.
According to the sources, the two suspected armed robbers were travelling in a Honda Fit when they noticed that they were being trailed by police detectives.
It is alleged that they then increased speed trying to evade arrest and in the process their car hit a woman who was disembarking from a kombi leading the kombi crew to join in the chase.
Sources said the kombi crew managed to block the vehicle and the detectives fired three warning shots to force the robbers to stop, but they did not take heed.
The woman was hit once by the fourth shot and the male, who is known as "Beefy", escaped into a house seeking refuge but was followed by a mob who beat him thoroughly before taking him to the police base where he was arrested.
In January this year two suspected armed robbers believed to have been behind a spate of robberies around the country were shot dead after exchanging gunfire with the police in Shamrock high-density suburb in Gweru following a high-speed chase.
