Two security guards in Kwekwe were reduced to amateurs when they lost a pistol and a magazine with seven rounds to three masked men.

Police say the three suspects who are still at large, attacked the armed security guards with a log. The incident occurred at Metro Peach Wholesalers in Kwekwe's industrial area on Friday at about 3.10AM.

Inspector Joel Goko, the police spokesperson for Midlands said: "We are investigating a case of robbery where two security guards lost a 7.62mm Tokarev pistol with seven rounds of ammunition and a cell phone. On Friday last week, Johannes Vumba, 61, and Molten Mhlanga, 46, both of Mbizo suburb were doing duty at Metro Peach Wholesalers. They were employed by Metro Security Company as security guards. They heard some footsteps on the premises and Mhlanga went to investigate the source of the noise. He was armed with a pistol that had seven rounds of ammunition," he said.

Mhlanga bumped into three men wearing masks.

They demanded the pistol but Mhlanga refused.

"They hit Mhlanga with a log on the head and leg. The three suspects took the pistol and a cell phone from Mhlanga.

"Vumba came to investigate and found the suspects assaulting his colleague. One of the suspects hit Vumba twice on the head with the same log. Mhlanga managed to escape and raised a safeguard alarm which is on the premises. The suspects fled. The matter was reported to police who attended the scene," said Insp Goko.

He said investigations were in progress and the suspects were still at large.

Insp Goko appealed to members of the public who might have information on the whereabouts of the suspects to contact any nearest police station or use police suggestion boxes.
