Two student leaders from the Zimbabwe National Students Union (Zinasu) were on Thursday arrested in the Midlands capital, Gweru, after addressing their colleagues on tertiary education tuition.

The Zinasu president, Gilbert Mutubuki and his treasurer general, Tamuka Chikonyora, were nabbed after addressing Gweru Polytechnic students in the afternoon of Thursday on the position of the union regarding tuition.

According to a statement by the Students Solidarity Trust (SST), the polytechnic wants all students to pay their fees in full, while Zinasu is insisting that poor students be allowed to stagger payments.

"The two leaders were arrested by the college security guards who handed them over to the Zimbabwe Republic Police. They are currently detained at Gweru Central police station on public violence charges," said SST.
