A GIRL, 14, is recovering in a Masvingo hospital after she fought off a man trying to rape her.
She suffered five stab wounds in the early morning confrontation that happened as she walked alone to school.
Police say the brave juvenile from Chief Nyajena area was left for dead as she resisted the rapist's manoeuvers.
The knife-wielding coward fled after she had fought back.
Masvingo provincial police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Nkululeko Nduna said the suspect ambushed the girl on her way to school last Thursday around 7AM.
"I confirm receiving a report of attempted murder involving a Form Two girl and a male adult. The suspect is still at large as he disappeared into a mountain after committing the crime," he said.
"We promise the long arm of the law will soon catch up with him. Once he is apprehended he will be charged for attempted murder."
Asst Insp Nduna said the girl was going to Nyabata High School alone when her assailant emerged from the bush wearing a dress while brandishing a home-made knife.
The girl failed to identify the man's voice as he threatened her with death along Renco Road, near Renco Mine. Asst Insp Nduna said she tried to escape but the man tripped her and stabbed her thrice on the head and twice on the shoulder.
The girl screamed for help but no one came to her rescue. The man tried to drag her into a nearby bush but she resisted and wrestled him until he fled from the scene heading towards a nearby mountain, leaving the girl bleeding profusely.
Despite the pain caused by the stabbing, the heroic teenager gathered strength and courage to walk to Muchimbwa Rural Hospital for treatment where she was further transferred to Morgenster Mission Hospital.
Her condition is said to be stable.
Asst Insp Nduna advised school children to avoid secluded places and to walk in groups when going to, or coming from school.
