MDC-T leader Morgan Tsvangirai was suffering from a lung infection and had to undergo two medical tests that resulted in anxiety on the part of the troubled politician in the past days.
At a time his spin doctors were busy trying to conceal the ailment which forced the former prime minister to cancel his much hyped weekend rally and take a bed rest, information reaching this newspaper indicates that Tsvangirai was diagnosed with a lung infection and he panicked fearing that he could have been poisoned.
From the panic, it is understood that his mind overworked and became troubled; a development which led to speculation that he could be suffering from mental and nervous breakdown.
"He suffered a lung infection and summoned all his children to be close to him including his wife, Elizabeth Macheka, as he feared for his life. He is a traumatised man hence the sickness is taking a toll on him," said a highly placed source.
"He underwent two tests to determine the problem with his lungs and was discharged this morning," (yesterday) said the source.
His spokesperson, Luke Tamborinyoka said the ex-premier was just exhausted and needed to rest as per his doctor's instructions.
"Why are you guys lying, right now I am being called by ZBC saying he did not pay his medical bills, when the guy is sick why can't you let him rest (sic). It is a lie that he is suffering from a lung infection, he is just exhausted as he had overworked," Tamborinyoka said.
After being discharged yesterday, Tsvangirai granted interviews to certain journalists as a way to "placate that all was well and no need for his supporters to panic".
Meanwhile there are reports that Tsvangirai failed to settle his $2 600 medical bills at the Harare's Trauma Centre and Hospital where he had been admitted, allegations which were rubbished by Tamborinyoka.
Trauma Centre is mainly for chronic ailments and brain related challenges and offers exclusive services to the elite.
Tsvangirai has in the past few months been conducting countrywide rallies which were seen as a visibility campaign at a time when other top party leaders are calling for his ouster.
His wife Elizabeth yesterday insisted that her husband was fit after failing "sick just like any other human being" and was strong enough to resume his duties.
Speaking at their Harare home yesterday, Elizabeth said her husband was not seriously ill as suggested by the media insisting that the former prime minister has been resting at their Highlands home.
