A ZVISHAVANE woman was on Thursday sentenced to nine months in prison for threatening to castrate her husband with a knife before cutting his police uniforms to shreds.

Florence Hove (25) was convicted on her own plea of guilty by Zvishavane magistrate Sangster Tavengwa when she appeared in court facing a charge of malicious damage to property.

It was the State's case that on May 1 this year, Hove's husband Evias Vadhuma Murambo (57), a senior member of the neighbourhood watch committee, returned home late and discovered that his wife had been communicating with one of her "many" boyfriends.

Murambo, who was drunk at the time, allegedly questioned his wife why she was cheating on him with a series of young boyfriends. A misunderstanding then arose resulting in a fight.

The State alleged that Hove took a butcher's knife and threatened to castrate her middle-aged husband, whom it was also indicated battered each time they had a misunderstanding.

Murambo managed to escape and locked his wife inside the house, and the two yelled at each other.

Hove allegedly warned Murambo that he would regret if he did not open the door, but he refused fearing that he would be stabbed.

Hove then opened the wardrobe and took out Murambo's police uniforms as well as seven jackets, two trousers and four shirts and shred them to pieces using the knife. Murambo slept outside and called his mother-in-law the following day before opening the door.

When he got into the house, he discovered that his uniforms and other clothes had been cut to pieces and made a report to the police, leading to Hove's arrest.

Tavengwa sentenced Hove to nine months, but suspended two months for five years on condition that she does not commit a related offence.

Another five months were suspended on condition that Hove performs 210 hours of community service at the District Development Fund premises in Zvishavane.

The other two months were suspended on condition she pays Murambo $250 as compensation for the clothes that she shredded.
