The Zimbabwe Union of Journalists (ZUJ) has condemned the assault of ZBC journalist, Relax Mafurutu, by members of Johanne Masowe eChishanu Budiriro sect last week.
Mafurutu was admitted in hospital after the severe beatings from the members of the church who also assaulted police officers.
ZUJ president Michael Chideme said, such incidences were the reason the Union has been advocating for the safety of journalists to be guaranteed.
"We want the safety of journalists to be guaranteed. We are also calling for the church involved in the attack to make a public apology and to meet the medical bills of the affected journalist. We are also calling for the police to bring to book all the church members who were involved in the attack and we are also urging the courts to give a judgement that shows there is the rule of law in Zimbabwe, and that sends a clear message that journalists are protected in Zimbabwe," Chideme said.
Meanhwile, organisation's secretary general Foster Dongozi said the union joined the Ditima family and the media industry in mourning the death of ZBC sports presenter and commentator Chengetai Ditima.
Ditima died on Saturday night on his way to hospital He had been in and out of hospital for the past two months. He was 42.
"Ditima was passionate about women development as demonstrated by his strong support for the National Women soccer team, The Mighty Warriors.
