Three people were killed, while several others were injured when a bus they hired to take them to a funeral was side-swiped by a haulage truck that was carrying timber in Dema along the Chitungwiza-Marondera Highway last night.
At least eight people on the bus were seriously injured, while several others sustained minor injuries in the accident that occurred around 8pm.
The bus was ferrying mourners to Hwedza for a funeral.
The injured were taken to Chitungwiza Central Hospital.
Ms Patience Matope, who escaped unhurt, said the bus - which had standing passengers on board - was struck by the timber that overlapped the truck's trailer and obstructed traffic.
"The truck had logs that were overlapping and covering the greater part of the road and all those who were seated on the right side of the bus were hit by the timber," she said.
"The bus was overloaded, with some passengers standing. We were going to Hwedza for the burial of my sister Mrs Patricia Choto."
The accident occurred barely two weeks after a commuter omnibus rammed a tree, resulting in the death of 10 people along the Harare-Chitungwiza Road.
