The ANC ward councillor charged with murder of a Zimbabwean national will appear again in court in August. The councillor was released on bail by the Seshego Magistrate's Court in Polokwane yesterday, after being arrested when a Zimbabwean man was stoned to death.
29-year-old Tebogo Mogapelo and 11 co-accused paid R5 000 bail each.
The Zimbabwean man was killed at Section 75, Seshego, last Monday. Locals claim he killed two South Africans during a house robbery. The suspects have also been charged with assault, for attacking other Zimbabweans and burning their homes.
Meanwhile, the South African Human Rights Commission says the continued threat of violence against and displacement of foreign shop owners perpetuates a state of insecurity and general unrest in the country.
The commission's comments come as World Refugee Day was celebrated worldwide yesterday. It says in South Africa refugees bear the brunt of increasing intolerance resulting in the destruction of property and loss of lives, as happened in the Eastern Cape recently.
The commission's Vincent Moaga said World Refugee Day was important for South Africans to recognise the richness and diversity refugees bring to society.
