Man spends 13 years paying maintenance for another man's child

A Masvingo engineer who has been wrongfully maintaining a child for the last 13 years as his own has filed a $100,000 lawsuit at the High Court in Harare against the mother after paternity tests revealed that the child was not his.
Engineer Chaputsira Chaputsira has also applied to the courts for the cancellation of the boy's (name withheld) birth certificate thereby making it uncertain that the juvenile would sit for his Grade 7 examinations in October this year. In fact, there is no way the boy can sit for the exams without a birth certificate and registration for Grade 7 candidates had since been closed.
Efforts to get a comment from the mother, Rosalia Mudzana who works for Masvingo City Council as a secretary were fruitless.
Chaputsira is represented by Joseph Maweni of Mutendi and Shumba law firm. Chaputsira has also applied to the courts for the cancellation of the child's passport and is further demanding R79,000 for a stand that he bought and developed which Mudzana now allegedly claims as hers.
The $100,000 that the engineer is demanding stems from the fact that he had been maintaining another man's child since the boy was born. He also stayed with the boy in his own home where he has another wife. Chapatsura has also been taking the child for holidays to Botswana where he worked.
"He was my favourite child and I loved him. I took him for holidays and I never knew that he was not my child," said an emotional Chaputsira when he spoke to our news crew.
The supposedly 'cheated man' only discovered the true paternity position when Mudzana forcibly took away the son from him and then claimed maintenance from the courts. It was then that a confidante told Chaputsira that the son man not be his after all because Mudzana allegedly had a relationship with one of her bosses at Masvingo City Council.
Provincial Magistrate jabulani Mzinyathi granted an order for paternity tests after an application by Chaputsira which then proved that the child was indeed not his.
Sources said Mudzana who claimed in court that she earned $1,070 as a secretary at the city council had a known relationship with one of her bosses who is believed to be the real father of the child.
