More than 142 vehicles have been rounded up by the police in an operation code named "Dzinotevedza Mutemo" (adhere to regulations) launched in Harare this week.
Out of the 142 impounded vehicles, 127 of the vehicles are commuter omnibuses which do not have proper registration papers.
Police's national spokesperson Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba said the operation was launched following the realisation that the Harare central business district (CBD) was turning into a jungle very fast, with unregistered commuter omnibuses parking, picking up and dropping off passengers at undesignated points.
"There is need to restore order in the CBD and we have started with the unregistered commuter omnibuses. As police we are trying our best to safeguard law abiding citizens," said Senior Assistant Commissioner Charamba.
Despite the existence of this operation, ZBC has established that some of the unregistered taxis are still plying the Fourth Street-Copper Cabana and Market Square routes.
Analysts said while these illegal operators seem to be assisting by charging lower prices than registered taxis, they are not only breaking the law, but are endangering lives of both pedestrians and passengers.
