The Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions said it is glad to advise of the adoption of the Convention for Domestic Workers by the just ended International Labour Conference in Geneva.

The 100th annual conference of the International Labour Organization adopted a set of international standards aimed at improving conditions of service for millions of domestic workers throughout the world.

The Convention is aimed at pushing for decent work for domestic workers. A number of countries are currently formulating legal and policy measures towards recognising economic and social value of domestic work and the need to improve domestic workers' living and working conditions. For example, in the Southern African region Zambia enacted legislation specifically addressing working conditions for domestic workers. The legislation enacted in January 2011 specifically seeks to address working time, sick leave, maternity leave and severance pay for domestic workers.

It is our hope that Zimbabwe will also work towards ensuring decent work for domestic workers. Please find attached a detailed report from the ILO on the Convention. A detailed report is available from www.ilo.org
