Two suspected armed robbers who were part of a six-man gang that robbed a Nyanga man of 300 grammes of gold were shot dead in Mudzi after a shootout with the police, state controlled 'The Herald' newspaper reported on Friday.
The paper states that one of the robbers died on the spot while the other died after being admitted to a hospital in Manicaland.
Manicaland provincial police spokesperson Inspector Leornard Chabata, Thursday said four of the armed robbers have since been arrested in connection with the case.
He said on June 13, the six went to Chisero Gold Mining site where they approached one Givemore Renzva Chiwaya (40) pretending to be employees from Fidelity Printers who wanted to buy gold.
"They were travelling in a Nissan Hardbody truck and alleged that they wanted to buy gold from him but he became suspicious," Insp Chabata said.
Chiwaya asked them to produce their identification particulars but they failed to do so resulting with the three of them manhandling him. The other three took turns to search Chiwaya and stole 300 grammes of gold, a gold scale and a digital calculator all valued at US$13 040.
It is reported that Chiwaya tried to resist and the robbers attempted to shoot him before driving off. Chiwaya informed his brother Charles (43) and they made a report to the police.
"The two then gave police officers a lift and followed the suspect's vehicle up until they caught up with them in Makaha area in Mudzi," Insp Chabata said.
Police ordered the gang to stop but they did not comply with the orders. Instead, they fired shots at the officers who also returned fire, resulting with Brian Mazenge being shot and dying on the spot. Tendai Mutyisi was shot on the neck and he died few hours after being admitted at a hospital.
Police managed to arrest the other four robbers and they are Dambudzo Saizi (36), Last Jerera (24), Chris Kadungure (42) and Bruce Madziro.
