President Robert Mugabe has left Harare for Equatorial Guinea to attend the 23rd Ordinary Session of the African Union.

The summit is being held under the theme: 'Agriculture and Food Security.'

The AU declared 2014 the year of agriculture and food security coinciding with the 10th anniversary of the adoption of the Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme (CAADP).

The AU Joint Conference of Ministers of Agriculture which was held in Ethiopia in May this year adopted a resolution endorsing seven goals to accelerate agricultural growth and transformation in Africa by 2025 and the recommendations will be presented to the heads of state at the summit for consideration.

Agriculture has the potential to enable sustainable development, boost economic growth, ensure food security and create jobs.

A bigger percentage of the African population depends on agriculture, but lack access to markets, finance, land tenure security and even simple technology such as improved seeds irrigation and fertilisers which could treble productivity.

Africa is also very rich in resources and has 60 percent of the world's arable land but according to statistics from the Food and Agriculture Organisation, foreign direct investment flowing into the continent is only 7 percent while Asia is getting almost 80 percent of the share.

The AU heads of state are also expected to deliberate on the status of peace and security on the continent, the implementation of NEPAD projects, the African peer review mechanism and the African common position on the post 2015 millennium development goals as well as climate change.

Mugabe, who is accompanied by several senior government officials was seen off at the Harare International Airport by Vice President Joice Mujuru, Senior Minister of State in the President's Office Ambassador Simon Khaya Moyo, Minister of State for Presidential Affairs Didymus Mutasa, Minister of State for Harare province Miriam Chikukwa, senior government officials and service chiefs among others.
