The Zimbabwe Republic Police has denied allegations that they are collecting and retaining US$3.7 million per month through roadblock fines.
In a statement, police national spokesperson Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba said the allegations by the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (Zimra) Commissioner General Gershem Pasi are false and intended to whip public emotions against the police.
Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba said they have treasury authority to retain spot fines for traffic offences only, while all other fines for various offences are remitted to the treasury.
She said all the money collected by the police under the retention scheme is subject to external and internal audit by relevant authorities in government.
She added that the ZRP's zero tolerance stance on corruption institutes criminal and disciplinary action against any offending officer followed by subsequent dismissal from work, adding that police has not been accessing the allocated budget, hence this authorised retention.
Senior Assistant Commissioner Charamba further said their monthly retentions have never exceeded $1 million per month.
