Sixty members of the MDC-T's women's assembly on Wednesday left the mainstream party led by Morgan Tsvangirai to join the renewal team fronted by ‘expelled' secretary-general, Tendai Biti, saying they had lost faith in the former's leadership.
Those who defected include three members of the provincial executive, vice-chairperson Patricia Makamera, secretary Clara Katupira and secretary for information Jenifer Jamu.
They announced their defection in the company of national representative Lizzie Zvimba, national executive member Thokozani Bote and deputy provincial secretary in the main wing Juliet Matope.
Addressing a press conference at the party's provincial offices yesterday, Mutasa South chairperson Lina Mutape said representatives in the women's assembly from all the 26 party districts in the province attended a meeting where a resolution was made to join the renewal team.
"The resolution was that we join the renewal team. There are at least two representatives here from the 26 party districts," Mutape said.
"We decided to join the renewal team because there is nothing more to expect from the MDC led by Tsvangirai."
Bote weighed in saying women suffered a lot under Tsvangirai and as such it was time to move ahead with progressive minds.
Two weeks ago, the provincial youth league also left the party citing the same reasons.
"This decision will activate the women's league of the renewal team. We now have a network and we will work on forming structures at lower organs," Bote said.
"We form the majority of the country's population and only the shallow-minded will think that we constitute a minority constituency. We are the backbone of the party."
She said when they formed the MDC in 1999 they wanted to liberate Zimbabweans, but had failed under Tsvangirai's leadership.
