Tendai Peter Munyanduri, the president of the opposition Progressive and Innovative Movement of Zimbabwe (Pimz), has called on President Robert Mugabe to step-down before the country plunges into total economic disaster.
He told the Daily News on the sidelines of a meeting to establish his party's structures here that Mugabe's Zanu-PF was running down the country's economy at an alarming rate.
"Mugabe should not continue to rule this country," Munyanduri declared.
"The rate at which our economy is deteriorating is uncalled for and we cannot allow him to further put the lives of millions of Zimbabweans into jeopardy, so we demand he steps down now before its too late."
An engineer by profession, Munyanduri said the devastation being brought on the economy would be difficult to undo.
"There are no indicators that the economy can be fixed by the ruling party and its leader," he said. "Actually were heading for a catastrophe.
"I can foresee a total collapse of the economy and the country and the next elections are still far. Mugabe should not continue to rule. He has been given enough time by Zimbabweans."
He said the economy was now in the "intensive care unit (ICU)."
"We have lost faith in the ruling party," Munyanduri said. "Our parastatals, municipalities and general service delivery are pathetic - there is no adequate electricity and water and it's time for Mugabe to pass on the baton to others who are not from his party."
Munyanduri said his party was mobilising support ahead of the 2018 elections where he hopes to end Zanu-PF rule. His party was formed ahead of the July 31 harmonised elections but did not contest the vote after failing to lodge nomination papers on time.
Pimz contested a parliamentary seat in Kadoma and lost.
"We have carried out a massive supporter recruitment drive and setting up of party structures in all the provinces," he said.
"We have been in Mutare, Mashonaland West, Marondera, Bulawayo you name it, all four corners of the country and we are confident that people are seeing sense in our party and we will be ready to defeat any political party in the country in 2018 and end Mugabe's disgraceful reign as president."
