A 28-year-old man from Harare who reportedly wrote anonymous letters to seven police stations claiming that Vice Presidents Joice Mujuru and John Nkomo and Commissioner-General Augustine Chihuri were facing assassination threats was on Friday convicted of deliberate supply of false information.
Wimbai Leslie Makoni of Highfield in Harare pleaded guilty to charges of deliberately supplying false information when he appeared before magistrate Ms Anita Tshuma. He was remanded in custody to June 27 for sentencing.
Prosecutor Ms Oxillia Magwaira told the court that between September 2 and September 30 in 2010 Makoni wrote letters alleging that Astone Gomo had smuggled 35 AK-47 rifles to be used in the alleged plot.
The court heard that Makoni indicated in the letters that the rifles were to be used in the assassination of Zimbabwe's two vice Presidents and the police chief.
According to State papers the letters also indicated that Gomo entered the country through unknown points with the help of four white men.
It was further heard that Makoni indicated in the letters that Gomo with the help of the four men built a house in Borrowdale next to Mujuru's house where the rifles were kept.
Gomo was picked for questioning and police searched his home but nothing was found.
Gomo pointed out to the police that he had differences with his wife Pamela Chitiyo (34) and her boyfriend Makoni who had earlier made threats that they would fix him.
Following a tip off from members of the public, on June 21 this year Makoni was arrested in Bindura.
According to State papers, Makoni was interviewed and admitted to writing the letter to fix Gomo whom he accused of having an affair with his wife.
