PRESIDENT Robert Mugabe's neighbour Michael Pazarangu was yesterday ordered to pay $50 by Friday or serve a 30-day jail term for unleashing his dogs on the Zanu-PF leader's bucks.
Pazarangu (55) was convicted on his own plea of guilty to allowing his unmuzzled ferocious dogs to roam freely into Mugabe's private residence in Borrowdale where they killed a bush buck on May 22 this year.
He told presiding magistrate Vongai Muchuchuti in mitigation that the offence was not serious although it had a great element of negligence.
Circumstances into the matter were that on May 22 this year, Sergeant Mike Dheremete was on night duty at Mugabe's house along Borrowdale Brooke Road.
After carrying out routine perimeter checks, Dheremete concluded that everything was well, but the following day at around 5am, he heard monkeys chattering and went to investigate only to find a buck lying dead on the ground.
Investigations established that the buck, which had wounds in the neck and genitals, had been mauled by Pazarangu's dogs.Dheremete informed his superiors before handing over duty to Sergeant Tarirai Mhere, who was the complainant in the matter.
Mhere later spotted Pazarangu's two dogs drawing closer to the carcass ready to devour it. The dogs, however, fled into Pazarangu's yard through an opening in the fence separating the two properties.
