UZ student appears in court for Baba Jukwa comments

A University of Zimbabwe student Romeo Tanyaradzwa Musemburi (20) is in court on charges of criminal nuisance for posting on Baba Jukwa that he wants guns to fight for democracy in the street.

Romeo arrived in handcuffs for initial appearance at the Harare Magistrate court earlier Wednesday accompanied by detectives.

Musemburi handed himself to CID Law and Order Section Monday morning accompanied by his lawyer, Tonderai Bhatasara and signed a warned and cautioned statement.

On Monday his lawyer Tonderai Bhatasara confirmed that Romeo had been arrested for making a statement and posting it to the Gmail account of Baba Jukwa saying give us guns and we will hit the streets and fight for democracy, a statement the police said was likely to disturb peace, convenience of the public section thereof.

Romeo is among a list of suspects named by police last week in the Baba Jukwa case.

The list linked to the anonymous blogger include UK based The Zimbabwean newspaper publisher Wilf Mbanga and his wife Trish, a system and software engineer based in the United Kingdom (UK) Walter Shoko, a computer programmer based in the UK, Samson Chifamba, a Zimbabwean based in UK, George Chirakasha, Anomie Drew, Piniel Nhokodi, and Sarudzai Florence as well as South Africa based journalist Mxolisi Ncube.

Ncube who handed himself at the Zimbabwe Embassy in South Africa on Sunday was Monday quizzed by the investigating officer in the case, Chief Superintendent Christopher Makedenge via phone with the help of embassy officials.

The Sunday Mail editor Edmund Kudzayi and his brother Phillip are in custody over the issue.
