MEMBER of National Assembly for Musikavanhu Prosper Mutseyami allegedly impregnated his maid and is refusing to take care of the 11-month-old child, The Manica Post reported.
All the parties involved in the issue confirmed it on Tuesday and Mutseyami said it was factional politics at play as his enemies were trying to use the issue of the baby to tarnish his image.
The mother of the child, Ms Tabeth Mabika, also confirmed having sired the child with Mutseyami, who has since turned his back on them and were now struggling to make ends meet. Ms Mabika and her baby are living in a tiny room in Chikanga Phase Two (address given.)
"Yes, I have a child with Mutseyami and you can come to my place of residence. My baby Anotidaishe is 11 months old, but her father is no-longer taking care of her. I am not the only single woman to raise a child, why are you so much interested in this case?
"I have been receiving so many calls from different people inquiring about our well-being with the baby and I am afraid that someone out there wants to harm my child. Leave us alone with my baby," she said.
When The Manica Post visited her given address on Tuesday afternoon she could not co-operate, but she later gave more information in a telephone interview.
"Like I said before I have a baby with Prosper. Do you think publishing the story will bring food on the table for the baby? I am now living in danger because of so many people phoning me, but the baby is there," she said.
Ms Mabika also confirmed that she wanted to dump the child at the MDC-T offices on March 23 in the presence of the embattled party leader, Morgan Tsvangirai.
"It is true that I wanted to take the child to the MDC-T offices but was stopped at the Mutare Polytechnic on my way there," she said.
Ms Mabika's father, Mabika, also confirmed that Mutseyami was their son-in-law in a telephone interview on Tuesday night.
"Yes, he is our son-in-law and we are in good books with him. The issue you are raising about him fathering our daughter's child is a family matter that can easily be solved within our family structures. What has the newspaper to do with this story when we are in good books with our son-in-law? We cannot disclose more information save to say that Mutseyami is my son-in-law up to now," said Mabika from his Chibuwe base.
When approached for comment on Tuesday night, Mutseyami said he was out of town, but insisted that it was dirty politics at play.
"I don't know everything. If it is true that I fathered this child, why should people wait for 11 months to make an issue out of it? I did not pay anything as alleged by the Mabikas. Can you also believe this issue?" said Mutseyami.
However, a close associate confirmed that Mutseyami was indeed the father of the child.
"My colleague has been bedding this girl for a long time. In fact, this child is the second one between the two after the first born who was a boy died. He (Mutseyami) at one time found a safe house for Mabika and the child in Zimunya. He did not want his wife to know about it. You can phone the Mabikas in Chibuwe.
"They can confirm the issue. He paid R15 000 to the Mabikas and they know him as their son-in-law. Where does politics come in when two consenting adults sleep together and have a baby out of that relationship? Our colleague is just trying to use politics to run away from his fatherly responsibilities," said the colleague.
