Chombo threatens Murambatsvina

Local Government minister Ignatius Chombo yesterday ordered municipalities to "deal with illegal structures in a move akin to the 2005 clean-up campaign code named Murambatsvina "drive out the filth".
Speaking at the unveiling of 20 cluster houses in Newlands, Harare, built by Homelux, Chombo said illegal structures were an eyesore and should be dealt with.
"As much as we have a huge housing backlog to attend to, ladies and gentlemen, let me underscore the point that as government we are not desperate to the extent of condoning illegal activities in the housing delivery sector," said Chombo.
"Let me hasten to say that the afore-mentioned state of affairs is unacceptable and should, therefore, be avoided and respective local authorities are urged to implement corrective measures as a matter of urgency."
In 2005, government embarked on an urban slum clean-up campaign that was later condemned by the United Nations, with reports that it had left almost a million people homeless across the country.
Chombo said he was not amused by the continued sprouting of unplanned settlements in and out of Harare.
"We have witnessed the emergence of unplanned settlements in and around Harare," said Chombo.
