MDC-T factions fight over Bulawayo

THE MDC Renewal Team descends on Bulawayo tomorrow seeking to gain supporters in their former party MDC-T's stronghold whose structures have been rocked by turmoil resulting in the recent resignation of chairman Gorden Moyo.
The team has toured Midlands South, Mashonaland West, Masvingo, Manicaland and Harare addressing structures on the Mandel Training Centre meeting that resolved to suspend MDC-T leader Morgan Tsvangirai and members of his top leadership.
Chairman of the Renewal Team Samuel Sipepa Nkomo yesterday said the meeting would be held at Stanley Hall in Makokoba.
"We'll be having a meeting at 10AM at Stanley Hall. We'll be addressing structures in Bulawayo as part of our countrywide tour updating masses on the resolutions made at the Mandel Training Centre and updating them on what is happening now," Sipepa Nkomo said.
He, however, downplayed that they would capitalise on the fractious MDC-T structures to garner support for their party.
"We're going on with our programmes and we're not really concerned with what is happening at that party. Whether those from there (MDC-T) come or not we go on with our programme," said Sipepa Nkomo.
He said his team would visit Matabeleland North on July 19 and Matabeleland South on a date to be advised.
Zanu-PF won all seats in Matabeleland South province and did well in Matabeleland North.
MDC-T Bulawayo provincial acting chairperson Dorcas Sibanda, however, dismissed the visit by Tendai Biti-led Renewal Team as a futile exercise that will not yield any results.
"They've been all over the country trying to garner support but it is clear that they are failing. They should stop wasting people's time," Sibanda said.
"In Bulawayo we've seasoned politicians who know what they want. They are behind the leadership of none other than Morgan Richard Tsvangirai our party president."
Sibanda claimed the people of Bulawayo had indicated that they were not interested in joining the Renewal Team. "They will not get anything in Bulawayo, they are just wasting time," she said.
Moyo resigned from his post last month citing failure of leadership and lack of direction in MDC-T.
He said he would remain an ordinary party member and MP for Makokoba constituency non-aligned to either of the two factions battling for control of the beleaguered party.
Moyo told a Press briefing in Bulawayo recently that the infighting rocking the troubled opposition was a symptom of leadership failure after the party lost last year's July 31 harmonised elections to Zanu-PF.
A meeting led by MDC-T national organising secretary Nelson Chamisa to elect Moyo's replacement last weekend was disrupted by feuding party activists who failed to agree on some officials contesting for the post.
