MDC-T rowdy youths trial date set

A Harare magistrate on Tuesday set August 5 as the trial date for eight opposition MDC-T members alleged to have been part to the mayhem that erupted at a party rally addressed by president Morgan Tsvangirai in Epworth two months ago.
Antony Shigadeya (52), Songi Chari (32), Veronica Chinembiri (35), Alex Makina (33), Nyararai Chipindu (52), Moses Chindanga (26), Kholwani Makina (26) and Emmerson Makahamadze (27) appeared before magistrate Donald Ndirowei charged with public violence.
They were remanded out of custody on $100 bail.
Marufu Mandevere of Kadzere, Hurungwe and Mandevere legal practitioners represented the accused.
According to the state represented by Farai Gatsi, the opposition party held a rally at Epworth Local Board open grounds on May 4 addressed by Tsvangirai.
Gatsi alleged that after attending the rally, the accused, acting in common purpose, proceeded to Belapezi farm within Epworth which houses Zanu-PF party supporters.
Upon arrival, they allegedly assaulted Zanu-PF supporters with stones and bricks, moving from one house to the next.
During the ensuing violence, they allegedly destroyed houses, window panes, doors, chairs and tables, among other property valued at $1 000.
The matter was reported to the police, leading to their arrest.
The Zanu-PF supporters were injured in the melee and were admitted and later discharged at a city hospital.
