10 High, Supreme court judges shortlisted

Former Bulawayo High Court judge, Justice Nicholas Mathonsi is in line to be appointed Supreme Court Judge as he is among the ten judges shortlisted by the Judicial Services Commission for interviews.

The Judiciary Services Commission had invited members of the public to nominate six individuals who will be appointed to the High Court and Supreme Court benches, as outlined in the provisions of the new constitution.

Citizens had up to April 14 to submit their nominations.

"In terms of section 180 (2) of the Constitution of Zimbabwe, members of the public are hereby invited to nominate suitably qualified persons to fill the above positions in the Supreme Court and the High Court," said the JSC in a statement recently.

However, JSC has revealed 10 names for candidates to be interviews on July 15.

Of the ten shortlisted only four are women.

"On 14th March 2014, the Judicial Service Commission advertised for nominations for three positions of Judge of the Supreme Court.

"Following nominations by the President and members of the public, the Judiciary Services Commission will interview ten candidates on Tuesday 15th July 2014," it said.

The interview would be opened to the members of the public.

The candidates include, Justice Chinembiri Bhunu, Charles Hungwe, Samuel Kudya, Euna Makamure, Lavender Makoni, Mathonsi, Susan Mavangira, Mercy Moya -Matshanga, Tendai Uchena and Happias Zhou.

Section 178 of the constitution, specifies that any Zimbabwean citizen who has reached the age of 40 years and has been legal practitioner for more than 10 years or has been a judge of a court of unlimited jurisdiction in civil or criminal matters is qualified to be nominated.
