BURYING a newly born baby in a garden landed a Headlands teenager in trouble after she was arrested for infanticide last week.

The cat was let out of the bag by fellow villagers when other family members tried to do a secret burial of the baby.

An anonymous report was made to the police, leading to the arrest of Tariro August of Plot 11, Yorkshire, Headlands.

The body was exhumed and taken to hospital for post-mortem.

Deputy Manicaland provincial police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Luxson Chananda said investigations were in progress.

He said Tariro was nine months pregnant, but concealed the pregnancy.

"One morning, she lied to her brother Silas August (29) that she was suffering from pneumonia after having felt labour pains. The brother decided to go and look for a vehicle to hire to ferry her to hospital.

"Taking advantage of her brother's absence, she preceded to a garden that was 500 metres away from their homestead, where she gave birth and buried the baby.

"The following day, an elderly woman, Everjoy Mangwende (60), questioned Tariro about the pregnancy and she told her what had happened. She led her to where she had buried the baby," said Asst Insp Chananda.

He said other family members tried to conduct a proper burial, but an anonymous report was made to the police leading to Tariro's arrest and exhumation of the baby's body.
