A ZIMBABWEAN national has been fined K1.8 million by the Lusaka magistrates' court after being convicted for making a false representation to the chief passport officer.
Lameck Dube was in court for allegedly making a false representation to the chief passport officer in order to obtain a Zambian travel document contrary to the Laws of Zambia.
It is alleged that Dube on June 12, 2011 in Lusaka was apprehended at Chirundu border as he attempted to leave Zambia for Zimbabwe when he presented the travel document number 377609/11 in the name Peter Phiri.
The court heard that investigations carried out revealed that Dube obtained the said travel document after using his friend's particulars to acquire a national registration card number 231396/53/1 to purport that he hails from Chakaka village in Petauke District when he was a Zimbabwean who entered Zambia in 2008.
When asked why he did that, Dube failed to give a satisfactory reply to the officer resulting in his being charged and arrested for the said offence.
When he appeared before magistrate Alice Walusiku, Dube admitted the charge slapped on him and the court convicted him accordingly.
In mitigation, he asked the court to exercise leniency on him saying he was a widower who had children to look after.
Magistrate Walusiku ordered Dube to pay a fine of K1.8 million or serve a jail sentence in default.
