Speaker of Parliament Jacob Mudenda has defended government big wigs who seek medical care in foreign countries.

MDC-T legislator Neslon Chamisa had raised the issue during a debate on Deputy Health minister Paul Chimedza's presentation on the state of the country's health facilities.

"Judging from what the Minister has said on the very dire  circumstances our health system finds itself in, is this the explanation for a lot of our Ministers and senior Government officials choosing to go to hospitals out of the country and not visiting our own hospitals which I believe to be a problem of patriotism?" Chamisa said.

Mudenda said there was no problem since the officials could afford the hospital fees.

"The supplementary question does not arise because those that can afford to pay for themselves, they have indicated that they can pay for themselves," he said.

"The question relates to those who are unemployed and are unable to take care of themselves that was the question."
