A Chinese national Wongai Huo has been arrested by police after 33 000 rounds of assorted ammunition were discovered at his offices in Harare's Msasa area.
Huo (51) was also found in possession of three kilogrammes of gold coated with silver and processed ivory which was packed in chess boxes.
Officer Commanding Harare province Senior Assistant Commissioner Clement Munoriyarwa said despite the suspect having a certificate for a fire arm, the quantities of ammunition found in his custody are not for use by individuals or companies.
He said such rounds of ammunition are only found in military establishments, adding that individuals are only permitted to have a limited number of rounds of ammunition.
Preliminary investigations indicate Huo could have been using the ammunition for poaching.
The police also revealed that they are keen to establish the movement of gold from Lebanmon Mine near Marlborough which is owned by the suspect.
