A Bulawayo woman has dragged Bikita West legislator Munyaradzi Kereke to court demanding $2 890 monthly maintenance for the upkeep of the couple's two-year-old daughter.

Bulawayo Magistrate Victor Mpofu yesterday heard how Kereke allegedly neglected taking care of the child's financial needs.

Leocardia Gonah, Kereke's estranged girlfriend through her lawyer Doreen Phulu of Lazarus and Sarif legal practitioners told the court she needed the money to cover school fees, groceries, medical expenses, clothing, rent among other expenses, for the child.

Kereke, who did not appear in court, arranged an out of court settlement through his lawyers.

"I am seeking maintenance for the child from the respondent in terms of Maintenance Act (Chapter 5:09). The respondent is the responsible person legally liable to maintain the under mentioned dependent (the child) and I wish to claim a monthly maintenance of $2 890," said Gonah.

She said Kereke was a rich man who could easily afford to fork out the money.

Gonah said Kereke should be able to pay $2 890 a month because he is a doctor of economics, businessman and MP who approximately earns over $20 000 per month.

Mpofu postponed the matter to 8 August.

"The parties to this case have reached a settlement but the copy of the settlement is yet to come from Harare. May this matter be postponed to 8 August 2014," said Mpofu.
