THE cash-strapped Gweru City Council has embarked on massive residential water cuts for those in arrears in a move that is likely to pose a potential health hazard.
Council workers could be seen disconnecting water yesterday after the city fathers indicated in June that they had sanctioned disconnections in a bid to raise money for salaries.
City treasurer Edgar Mwedzi said council was yet to assess the outcome of water disconnections in generating revenue for the wage bill.
"In our works council meeting of the 23rd of June, it was indicated that we needed to collect $195 000 to meet (the wage bill of) Grade 1 to 7," said Mwedzi in a memo.
