A bitter wrangle over a church stand between the Johanne Masowe eChishanu and the High Glen Seventh Day Adventist (SDA) churches in Harare has ended, with the former emerging victors.
According to the Harare City Council's latest minutes, it has now been resolved to lease stand number 17575 in Budiriro to the Vapostori despite objections by the SDA church.
The dispute over the stand began last year before Council in February this year ruled in favour of the Vapostori. However, the SDA church appealed the ruling and council was forced to deliberate on the issue again before deciding to stick to their initial decision.
"It has been noted that the committee has considered the objection received from the High Glen Seventh Day Church on Council's intention to lease Stand 17575, Budiriro Township to Johanne Masowe eChishanu, Budiriro Towship.
"That notwithstanding the objections received and for the reasons stated, Council affirms its previous decision recorded under Item 15 of the Finance and Development Committee minutes dated February 4 2014 to lease Stand number 17575, Budiriro Township to Johanne Masowe eChishanu," read the minutes.
According to Council, the Finance and Development Committee considered a June 2 2014 report circulated by the Director of Works (Acting City Valuer and Estates Manager) in which he reported that arising from the advertising processes in terms of Section 152 of the Urban Councils Act (Chapter 29:15), one objection was received from the SDA church.
The SDA church had objected on the grounds that they had been temporarily using the stand after they had been displaced from another stand they had occupied.
The Finance and Development Committee was, however, advised of Council's standing policy which requires that one church be allocated one stand within a radius of five kilometres, noting also that the SDA was allocated Stand number 8896, Glen View Township, barely a kilometre from the Budiriro stand Township.
The committee, therefore, noted that the objection suggesting they (SDA) be allocated this stand would disadvantage the Johanne Masowe eChishanu which had not been allocated any church stand in the area.
