A 43-year-old Murewa man has been dragged to court facing rape charges after an 11-year-old girl eloped to him.

Andrew Musekiwa yesterday asked the High Court to free him on bail.

High Court judge Loice Matanda-Moyo freed him on $200 bail. She ordered Musekiwa to reside at his rural home, report once every Friday to the police and not to interfere with state witnesses, as part of his bail conditions.

Prosecutor Benson Taruvinga had opposed the bail application filed by Musekiwa's lawyer Arthur Gurira. Taruvinga argued that Musekiwa was a flight risk, considering that he was facing a serious offence.

However, Gurira told the court that his client was a suitable candidate for bail, claiming no evidence points to the fact that he was the one who had committed the offence.

Matanda-Moyo ruled that there was no justification to deny Musekiwa bail.

The court heard that Musekiwa pursued the girl, who was doing Grade Three at Ganyambadze Primary School in Mutoko in July 2012.

He allegedly proposed love to the girl, a proposal the juvenile turned down. The girl, according to state papers, told her grandmother, who in turn said nothing about Musekiwa's alleged advances.

Musekiwa allegedly trailed the girl, assisting her to do some chores and at times f*ndled the minor, the court heard.

The girl is alleged to have told her grandmother about the sexual advances, who in turn told her to keep quiet.

It is alleged Musekiwa eventually had sex with the minor in August the same year. The girl did not tell anyone about the incident.

The court heard Musekiwa continued having sexual intercourse with the girl for several days, an issue the juvenile kept under wraps.

Musekiwa allegedly made arrangements to have the girl elope from Mutoko to his Murewa home.

He stayed with the girl for several days, before he was tracked down and arrested on rape charges.
