A POLICEMAN stationed at Masvingo Central allegedly severely assaulted his customary wife until she lapsed into a coma following a domestic dispute.
Constable Nicodemus Kamupanyinya, 25, of Runyararo West, was not asked to plead to a charge of attempted murder when he appeared before Masvingo provincial magistrate Jabulani Mzinyathi.
He was granted $100 bail and remanded to September 11.
For the State, James Murambiza said on Monday, Kamupanyinya had a misunderstanding with Prestige Jinga, his wife of five years over an undisclosed issue, while he was drunk.
The wife was assaulted until she passed out. She was rushed to Masvingo General Hospital and then transferred to Parirenyatwa Hospital in Harare for specialist attention.
"On Monday at around 2PM, Kamupanyinya, who was drunk, had a dispute with his wife after which there was a harsh exchange of words. The argument degenerated into a fight between the two. When the couple stopped fighting Jinga went to sit on the verandah," said Murambiza.
"Unbeknown to her, the husband came from behind and unleashed a blow which floored her to the ground. Undeterred, Kamupanyinya followed his victim and savagely kicked her all over the body until she became unconscious."
A neighbour called an ambulance and Jinga was rushed to Masvingo General Hospital where she was admitted in the intensive care unit before her transfer to Harare.
A report was made to the police leading to Kamupanyinya's arrest.
