A 19–YEAR-OLD Buhera woman last week committed suicide after being jilted by her boyfriend.

Deputy Chipinge District police spokesperson Sergeant Clothing Ncube confirmed the incident which happened at Chinyamutikiti Village under chief Chamutsa last Friday.

"On August 8, Letwin Tirivaviri (19) of Buhera died after drinking a pesticide following a misunderstanding with her boyfriend who was denying impregnating her.

"Letwin, who was staying with her uncle, Jephat Mabhika (47), failed to find common ground with her boyfriend, Mucharadza Vhenati (27) of the same village, after the latter refused to accept responsibility of her pregnancy," said Sgt Ncube.

He said Letwin phoned her aunt, Martha Mabhika (35) of Gadzai Village, and informed her that she wanted to commit suicide because her family was also neglecting her.

"Letwin proceeded to her bedroom and locked herself from inside. She drank the pesticide. Her uncle Jephat heard Letwin crying from inside her bedroom and managed to break the door. He found her lying on the floor with froth on her mouth. He tried to induce vomiting by forcing her to drink milk, but his efforts were too late as she died in the process," he said.

A police report was made and Letwin's body was taken to Birchenough Bridge Hospital for a post-mortem.

Sgt Ncube urged members of the public to seek professional counselling when they encounter challenges in life.
