An unlicensed commuter omnibus driver hit two police officers while evading a roadblock, before pelting a police vehicle with stones, a Harare magistrate heard yesterday.
Abraham Moyana, 23, has been charged with failure to comply with police instructions, two counts of attempted murder, malicious damage to property and driving without a licence.
According to State papers, the complainants are police officers Emmanuel Mapira, Prince Mupangavanhu and chief superintendent Matsika.
The court heard that the incident took place on July 30, when the police officers were manning a roadblock along Chiremba Road in Harare.
It is alleged that the police officers ordered Moyana, who was driving a Nissan Caravan to stop, but he defied the order.
According to State papers, Moyana slowed down, before accelerating, hitting Mapira as he sped off.
Matsika, who is the officer commanding Chitungwiza district, then ordered Mupangavanhu and another police officer only identified as Muguti to get into his Ford Ranger and chase Moyana.
Moyana allegedly drove towards Epworth and when he arrived at Solani Shops, he reached a dead end.
As he reversed, the court heard, he hit Mupangavanhu, before driving off and parking his car near Solani Shops.
The police officers tracked down Moyana.
It is alleged that Moyana and his alleged accomplices, who are still at large, disembarked from the Nissan Caravan and began throwing stones at the Ford Ranger, smashing the rear windscreen and damaging the left door.
Moyana and his accomplices fled from the scene, after causing damage valued at $1 097, 75, the court was told.
Police officers checked with the Central Vehicle Registry, where they managed to identify the owner of the car that was being driven by Moyana, leading to his arrest.
Harare magistrate Tendai Mahwe remanded Moyana in custody to September 11, for trial.
