'Mugabe denying millions of their rights'

Amnesty International (AI) has accused President Robert Mugabe of denying millions of Zimbabweans their basic human rights, a year after being sworn in.

The AI deputy director, Noel Kututwa, accused the 90 year leader who won last year's elections with a landslide even though the opposition alleged electoral fraud, of failing to introduce legislation that align with the new constitution.

"A year after being sworn in, President Mugabe has yet to align the country's laws with the new constitution and public order, security and criminal laws are being used to deny people their rights to freedom of expression, association and peaceful assembly," said Kututwa.

He added: "Zimbabwe must open up the space for its citizens to enjoy their fundamental freedom freedoms as enshrined in the country's new constitution which they overwhelmingly endorsed last year."

As the Southern African Development Community (SADC) was winding up its heads of state summit in Victoria Falls on Monday, police clamped down on a jobs demonstration by MDC youths.

Several demonstrators were seriously injured in the ensuing clashes which also saw a local photojournalist being arrested and detained briefly.

Parliament needs to align more than 400 laws with the new constitution that was adopted after the March 2013 referendum.
