Assistant Inspector Arthur Mbwembwe, who is suspected to have a led a trio of renegade cops to set up an illegal roadblock in Tsholotsho is on the run from the law, following the arrest of his partners in crime. Other cops have launched a manhunt for him.
Mbwembwe is alleged to have masterminded a scam in which together with Sergeant Ephraim Sithole, Constable Darlington Banda and Constable Davy Mlambo, all based at Tsholotsho Police Station, allegedly stole a Z69J book which is used to issue tickets for traffic crimes and mounted a series of unsanctioned roadblocks for four day, two weeks ago.
His fellow rogue cops were arrested last week but Asst Insp Mbwembwe did not report for duty when he got wind of the arrest of the three.
Police have issued a wanted person alert for him. The cops turned criminals' offence came to light when traffic tickets with their names came up following the interception of a number of motorists.
It was discovered that they had not surrendered the money written on the tickets at Tsholotsho Police Station.
Investigators could not ascertain how much money that was raised through the illegal roadblock that was mounted at Tsholotsho Centre.
Sgt Sithole, and Csts Banda and Mlambo appeared before Tsholotsho magistrate Abednico Ndebele facing fraud charges today and were each granted $200 bail.
